GIFTED EDUCATION
How can you advocate for your gifted learner?
Advocate for Gifted Children
1. Get Informed-Before advocating, research your district’s gifted education policies. Understand how students are identified and served—policies vary by state, district, and school (NAGC, 2023).
2. Know the "Why"Gifted students have unique learning needs. Be ready to explain why they require advanced instruction beyond the regular curriculum. Review common myths about giftedness and prepare to share research-based facts (NAGC, 2023).
3. Define Your Goal-Once you know what services exist, clarify what changes or improvements you want. Use the NAGC Pre-K–Grade 12 Gifted Programming Standards to identify exemplary practices and essential services.
4. Partner with Educators-Start by speaking with your child’s teacher and gifted coordinator. If needed, then approach the school principal. Be respectful of their time and come prepared with a clear, constructive plan (NAGC, 2023).5. Engage the CommunityBuild support through local school groups, service organizations, and media. Start a parent group, volunteer for committees, or offer to present about gifted education at community events to raise awareness.
